Sometimes the words we remember most aren’t the ones we expect.
A few years ago, I spent far too much time wondering how other people saw me.
Did I look confident enough?
Did I look feminine enough?
Would anyone notice?
Like a lot of people, I thought the biggest compliment I could receive was about my appearance.
“You look beautiful.”
“You look amazing.”
“You look so feminine.”
Those words always made me smile.
But they weren’t the ones that stayed with me.
One afternoon, I met a friend for lunch.
We hadn’t seen each other in months.
After we ordered, she looked at me, smiled, and said,
“You seem really happy lately.”
That was it.
Not a comment about my clothes.
Not my makeup.
Not my hair.
Just…
“You seem really happy.”
I don’t think she realized how much that meant.
Because in that moment, I knew she wasn’t looking at how I appeared.
She was noticing how I felt.
That’s a very different kind of attention.
People often think acceptance is the goal.
And don’t get me wrong—acceptance matters.
Being treated with respect matters.
Feeling safe matters.
But I’ve learned there’s another step that comes after acceptance.
Understanding.
Acceptance says,
“You’re welcome here.”
Understanding says,
“I want to know who you are.”
One lets you enter the room.
The other invites you to stay.
Looking back, some of the people who made the biggest difference in my life weren’t the ones who always had the right words.
They were the people who asked ordinary questions.
“How’s work going?”
“Did your weekend get any better?”
“Are you still planning that trip?”
Those conversations reminded me that I was more than a label.
I was just another person with good days, bad days, unfinished plans, and too many tabs open in my browser.
Funny enough, that’s what feeling understood looks like.
Not being the center of attention.
Not being an inspiration.
Not being a topic.
Just being another person sharing a table, a laugh, or a conversation.
Maybe that’s why ordinary moments stay with us.
They’re proof that we don’t always need people to understand every part of our story.
We just need them to see the person standing in front of them.
And sometimes…
that’s enough.
Be Seen. Be Understood.
